…
“The Nightingale” vessel ran aground on the rocks of Munster on Glenmore Beach in 1933. Part of the wreck, the boiler and cylinder, can still be seen on the rocks and is accessible at low tide. The “crankshaft” of the ship lies at Sithela. There are photos and history of the area at the Nightingale Restaurant (2km from Sithela). The collection of old photographs and memorabilia makes for fascinating reading. The restaurant boasting great sea views, is named after the vessel, and is renowned countrywide for its fine seafood, excellent A-La-Carte menu and Sunday Lunch. Being situated on the "Wild Coast" sporting many shipwrecks, interested visitors can still pick up bits of porcelain or trader beads from these vessels, particularly after storms and high seas. A framed example of the porcelain can be found at the reception area of the restaurant.
The gardens around the restaurant are home to many
Hyrax rock rabbits (Dassies) who are protected in this area. Colonies of these Dassies can be seen at
Southbroom (north of Munster) and Glenmore beaches.

-Red Desert
(10km -Port Edward) …Rich in Diversity, the Red Desert, near Port Edward and accessed off the Pont Road, consists of areas of grassland, forest, wetland and eroded red sands (the Red Desert), the cliff face overlooking the Umtamvuna River and the mangrove community below. Aesthetically the area gives superb views over the Umtamvuna Gorge and Estuary with the stark contrast of the Red Desert. Southern reed buck, common duiker, blue duiker and oribi have been seen. Rare and vulnerable plant species have been discovered in the area. The presence of Early, Middle and Late Stone artifacts on both the Upper and Lower Red Desert should be noted and Archeological studies have been done.
Hotspot – Recognised Worldwide - This area lies within the area known as Pondoland Centre of Endemism (One of the two such centres of the Maputoland-Pondoland Region of Plant Diversity) there are about 235 centres in the world and the Pondoland Centre has also been rated by Conservation International as one of about 2 dozen plant hotspots recognized world wide. Save the Red Desert- Local residents are concerned about the care and maintenance of the area as invasive plants are threatening large areas of the upper and lower Red Desert and this sensitive area is frequently being used as a 4x4 track. The land belongs to the Hibiscus Coast Municipality and farmers owning land adjacent to it are interested in adding their land to an area declared a Nature Reserve for all time. Moves are afoot at present to get protection for this land, but as with everything, willing workers and funds are in short supply. Until something can be done we request all visitors to the Red Desert to respect its “uniqueness” and treat the area as the special place it is. (Info written by S. Breedt of Leisure Bay)
